The film, which originally premiered in 2009, was the first-ever foreign language Oscar submission from Ethiopia and is only now getting a belated local theatrical release.

Ethiopian Political Head-Butting in Southwest Houston Spawns Lawsuit, Criminal Charge

An Ethiopian-American man handing out flyers for a memorial service for Ethiopia's recently deceased prime minister, Meles Zenawi, claims he was assaulted by a countryman who reviled the repressive leader, according to criminal and civil court documents.
The victim and plaintiff, Tesfai Tsadik, is suing both Wossenu Gizaw, the alleged assailant, and Debre Salam Medahnealem Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Fondren Southwest house of worship near which the alleged assault took place.

According to the pleadings in the civil suit, on August 26, Tsadik attended services at the church. After church let out, Tsadik went across the street and started handing out flyers for Zenawi's memorial service.

That might not have been the wisest move. According to the suit:

The church founders and many of its members are opponents of Meles Zenawi. The members of the church, including members in leadership positions, have openly shared their views and hatred of Meles Zenawi and his government. In fact, church members and leaders protested outside during the funeral of Mr. Zenawi.

So apparently Tsadik was decidedly not preaching to the choir. Even so, this is a free country, and what allegedly happened next is reprehensible.

Ethiopia needs a win of any kind against Kenya’s Harambee Stars in their final group match to book a slot in the Quarter finals of the CECAFA Tusker Senior Challenge Cup. The Walya Antelopes have one win from two matches and a raw against Kenya would mean they exit the tournament on Goal difference basis. They are currently third on the pool behind leaders Uganda and second placed Kenya.

Coach Seyum Kabede has reiterated that his team intends to go into the quarters at all costs and they need to register a win against Kenya on Friday.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Ethiopia’s leader has fired a government minister whose wife faces terrorism charges.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Thursday fired the country’s civil minister, Junedin Sado, whose wife is one of 29 people facing terrorism charges related to protests by Muslims who accuse of the government of meddling in their religious affairs.
Sado published a letter in the country’s independent newspapers in which he defended his wife and criticized the federal prosecutor’s charges.

Also in Thursday’s Cabinet reshuffle, Hailemariam promoted two ministers to double as deputy prime ministers, giving the country three deputy prime ministers for the first time, a sign the ruling party is favoring collective leadership after the August death of its longtime leader Meles Zenawi.

Dr. Tewodros Adhanom was appointed as the country’s new foreign affairs minister.

Zambian Govt Official Arrested in Ethiopia over Unpaid Liquor Bill

Thirst for liquor has landed a Patriotic Front Lusaka Councilor in trouble in Addis Ababa after he failed to settle a $2000 bill he accumulated at Sheraton Hotel.

Ethiopian security officials detained Chikutali Nkhoma, a Councilor for Lusaka’s Silwiza ward in Northmead area.

Nkhoma traveled to that country with other council officials where he reportedly incurred the large bill for alcoholic beverages for himself and numerous others.

Upon checking out other council officials left Mr. Nkhoma in the hands of the security personnel as they could not pay the accumulated bill on his behalf.

Lusaka Mayor Daniel Chisenga has expressed disappointment over the development describing the incident as embarrassing for the nation.

Chisenga further said Nkhoma will face disciplinary action as soon as he is released by the Ethiopian officials.

Ethiopia began their 2012 Cecafa campaign to a flying start beating debutantes South Sudan 1-0 in the opening match played at the Namboole stadium in Kampala on Saturday.
Yonatel Kebede scored the only goal of the match at the hour mark after getting a neat feed from Said Saladin to slot into the net. The match had begun on a high pace with the debutantes being put on the back foot for long spell in the early exchanges.
Saladin, who was a constant threat to the Sudanese defense, could have scored an early goal in the first half when he wasput through with an inviting cross from the right flank, by Aklilu Ayenew but his free header went inches off the cross bar.

Standing in a tranquil spot in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, nestling under the lush, green shadow of Mount Entoto, it is almost impossible to imagine yourself in war-torn Carana. But that is exactly what the 106 participants in Exercise Njiwa (Swahili for peace) are trying to do in the grounds of the eastern brigade headquarters of the African Standby Force (ASF). The tinkling of cutlery that emerges from the refreshment tent is no substitute for the sound of gunfire and mortar rounds.

In cramped classrooms, full of banks of computers and detailed maps of the imaginary republic of Carana, on the equally fictitious island of Kisiwa, just off the real coast of Somalia, an African Union (AU) peace support operation is being simulated. The participants are undergoing training as part of the civilian and police components of the ASF.

Ethiopian family forced to sell flat amongst protests

OSLO: A family of four from Ethiopia may end up homeless following one neighbour’s written complaints about noise.

Former refugee Mr Daniel Feyisa, wife Frehiwot, their seven-year-old daughter Idlawit, and 18-month-old son currently live at Ammerud located in the capital’s north-eastern district of Groruddalen.
They now face eviction and forced sale of their flat within three months following the neighbour’s repeated allegations their noise affects living conditions and sleep.
Tried to find a solution
According to an earlier letter from the Ammerudkollen housing cooperative’s board (‘borettslag’), the complaints refer to “running, knocking, slamming, and blaring radio/TV.”
“Neighbours are awoken by knocking and loud bangs at night,” it continued.
The board alleges the family has committed significant housing statute and other regulatory breaches specific to living agreements there.
Housing cooperative and condominium association management company OBOS sent a letter about the forced sale on behalf of the board.

Ethiopia delays appeal of jailed blogger Eskinder Nega, opposition leader Andualem Arage

(AFP) ADDIS ABABA — An Ethiopian court on Thursday delayed the appeal of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage who were jailed earlier this year for for terror-related offences.
Judge Dagne Melaku said the Supreme Court needed several weeks to look over the "bulky" case file to review the evidence against them, setting the next hearing for December 19.
Eskinder and Andualem were among 24 people convicted in June under Ethiopia's anti-terrorism legislation. Eskinder was jailed for 18 years, while Andualem was sentenced to life.
They appeared in court Thursday alongside two other defendants also appealing their guilty verdict.
Eskinder, who is representing himself, rejected the claim that he had links with the US-based Ginbot 7 group, considered a terrorist organisation under Ethiopian law.
"I was accused of being a member of Ginbot 7, but there was no evidence provided by the prosecution," he told the court.

Eritrean hostage given five day to gather ransom or be harvested for organs by Sinai traffickers

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has learned that an Eritrean refugee held hostage by Bedouin traffickers for three months has been given five days to raise US$25,000 or face illegal organ harvesting. His case highlights a continuing lack of protection and assistance for refugees and migrants from the Horn of Africa, who are routinely abducted and abused by people traffickers in the Sinai Peninsular.

Twenty-two year old Philemon Semere escaped from Eritrea to Ethiopia in 2010, where he sang in the church choir in Adi Harish Refugee Camp. Early in 2012, he travelled to Sudan and was attempting to reach Israel when he was abducted by Rashaida traffickers and taken to one of several torture and extortion facilities in the Sinai. He was beaten and abused regularly and at that time his captors asked him to source US$ 33,000 to ensure his release, or lose a kidney.

The little girls got hearing aid implants to give them the ability to hear for the very first time.

Seven-year-old Ruby Shasteen's bright smile already speaks for itself.

Her sister, Kate is already in surgery.

The girls' parents, Al and Chris Shasteen, are fully aware of how huge the day really is.

It's a big deal. Their lives are going to change," says mom Chris.

Ethiopia finishes draft labour agreement for workers in the UAE

DUBAI // The Ethiopian government has finished drafting a new labour agreement designed to protect the rights of its citizens who move to the UAE for jobs as domestic workers.
The agreement – to be handed to the UAE Embassy in Addis Ababa – will stipulate a minimum wage, mandatory insurance and outline workers’ rights.

Abey Girma, Suspect in Murder of Ethiopian Dallas Restaurant Owners, Moved From Colorado to Texas

It’s been three months since 40-year-old Yayehyirad “Yared” Lemma and 31-year-old Yenenesh “Yenni” Desta were shot to death in front of their Lower Greenville home. The couple was returning home from Desta, the Ethiopian restaurant they ran on Greenville Avenue near Forest Lane, when a man accosted them on their front porch. Police would later say Abey Belette Girma was the shooter, and that he’d followed the couple home from the restaurant because they’d “disrespected him.”

Dallas police issued a capital murder arrest warrant for Girma, who’d left the state: A witness told police the 37-year-old Girma showed him the pistol he used to shoot the couple, then forced him to drive to Goodland, Kansas. Eventually, Girma showed up in Aurora, Colorado, where he was taken into custody and booked into the Arapahoe County jail.

And that’s where he sat till last week. But Dallas County records show that Girma is now being held in the Dallas County jail. He’s being held on a $1 million bond, charged with capital murder.

Sources familiar with the case say it took so long to get Girma back to Dallas because he fought extradition.

Girma is due in court Monday to approve Juan Sanchez as his court-appointed attorney. Sanchez says a pre-trial hearing will follow soon after.

Peer mentors, workshops will help inform high-schoolers

At Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Beemnet Kebede said she has seen that students who had recently immigrated to the United States needed help finding information about topics such as classes, graduation and extracurricular activities.

While she has helped the students who have approached her in the past, Kebede is now able to help her peers with a grant she won from the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative for the program she developed called “Changing Minds.”

Ethiopia was once a byword for poverty and famine.

It is still one of the poorest countries in the world, with an estimated third of the population earning less than $1 (63p) a day, but the country also has one of the world's fastest growing economies.

Opinion is sharply divided, however, as to whether or not it is wise to invest in the country.

Since 2004, its economy has been expanding by about 10% a year. The government expects growth to continue in double digits - but a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggests it will slow to 6.5% in 2013.

Even the IMF predictions are impressive, however, considering the current global financial climate and the fact that unlike many other countries on the continent, Ethiopia does not have much in the way of natural resources.

Dr. Mesert Chekol, one of the most distinguished Ethiopian Professors of Journalism and Communications,  the author of “The Quest for Press Freedom One Hundred Years of History of the Media in Ethiopia” and a famous Ethiopianist  dies after a battle with liver cancer.

Meseret was a teacher in the Department of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He received his Ph.D. in mass communication and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Minnesota.  In the 1980s he served as a radio journalist for eight years in  Ethiopia. Dr. Meseret had been tirelessly serving the Ethiopian community thorough out his life – always anchored in his deep sense of love for and uncompromising commitment to his beloved Ethiopia.

A promise between Ethiopian friends ends in a murder-suicide

The two men were close friends, dancing at nightclubs, listening to reggae music, talking about their aspirations and, sometimes, their worst fears. If one suffered a life-threatening injury, they promised each other, the other would make sure to disconnect him from any machine keeping him alive.

Neither man would allow the other to suffer.
In 2006, the year after Mesfin Nega and Shimelis Yegazu made their pact, a group of men attacked Nega outside an Adams Morgan nightclub, breaking his neck and damaging his spinal cord. When he awoke from an induced coma, his breathing made possible by a ventilator, Nega learned that he was a quadriplegic.

It's been a long time, hasn't it? Too long, I'll wager. When last we spoke, I was waxing poetic about why I love intern
ational travel, right before leaving for an epic journey to Ethiopia at the invitation and expense of The One Campaign. Since then, I've had a full course of malaria medicine, dealt with a massive bout of jet lag and had a fabulous adventure. It was, of course, amazing.

I've also had time to reflect on my trip. I've traveled a lot in my life, and I'm always surprised by the new revelations I have every time I visit someplace new. And so, for today's Bliss Your Heart, I thought I'd share my top five lessons that I'm grateful Ethiopia taught me.

1. The language of children's laughter is universal.

The main language that is spoken in Ethiopia is Amharic, and has its own characters, Amharic Fidel -- which is to say that it was completely foreign to my eyes and ears. We were lucky that for the most part, we had people who were bilingual who helped us navigate language barriers; otherwise, it could have been very
difficult to communicate.

Western donors assume that all good things - elections and poverty relief - go together, but this ignores political realities

With the majority of voters in many African countries being rural and economically disadvantaged, an increase in democracy could be expected to favour politicians advocating anti-poverty measures, especially in agriculture.

However, Colin Poulton, a research fellow at the Soas Centre for Development, Environment and Policy, argues in a recent working paper that it is not that simple. Questioning what motivates governments' electoral strategies, Poulton explains that many politicians are more likely to rely on ethnic allegiances and social/political control to secure votes rather than advocating popular policy solutions. To learn more about his research findings and their implications, Africa Portal intern Vanessa Humphries spoke to him:

Vanessa Humphries: What prompted your initial research focus on the political economy of agricultural policy in Africa?

Colin Poulton: I have a background as an economic agriculturalist, concentrating on agriculture policy in Africa. Throughout my work, I have questioned what motivates states to pursue particular policies. Finding that the answer is rooted in the political systems of a country, I wanted to examine if over 15 years of democratization in African countries has translated into making governments more accountable to the rural majority, or encouraged pro-poor agricultural policy and investment.

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 20: Owners of offices, which recruit housemaids from Ethiopia, have complained about the Ethiopian Embassy’s alleged failure to solve several issues concerning the housemaids, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.

Sources revealed the embassy has closed its doors on housemaids who escaped from their sponsors; giving them no option but to roam around the streets. Sources said several domestic labor offices have expressed disappointment over the embassy’s inability to play its role efficiently; thereby, making the housemaids, sponsors and offices lose their rights. Sources added the owners of domestic labor offices and the Kuwaiti sponsors often engage in heated arguments due to their failure to determine the whereabouts of absconding housemaids.

Sources said the absconding Ethiopian housemaids are often seen roaming around the streets in different parts of the country because their embassy does not provide them with a suitable shelter. Sources revealed more than 700 Ethiopian housemaids are said to be roaming around — a phenomenon which might spread contagious diseases and lead to dire consequences especially if some of them decide to return to their sponsors.

The loss of Ethiopia's wild arabica beans will not spell the end of our daily latte, but exceptional flavours may disappear forever

Last year, when I was on an unsanctioned tour of a coffee warehouse outside Antwerp, a trader confided that several of the world's most important coffee brands were buying beans that were significantly inferior to those they usually purchased. The beans weren't junk – not the kind, as the broker put it, that end up at a truck stop in Poland – but they were a few steps down from the standard buys.

It was a shrewd move. Coffee was trading at an all-time high, and the multinational brands knew that consumers were more likely to flip out at a modest price hike than a drop in quality. Switch good beans for passable beans and few will notice, let alone care; keep your standards but raise prices 10c and you'll have customers complaining in the queue and tweeting about it from the counter.

2012 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) confirms overall positive trends in governance on the continent, but reveals unfavourable shifts in some of Africa’s regional powerhouses

The sixth Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), published today, reveals that governance in Africa has improved since 2000. In the last 12 years, at the continental level, there have been improvements in 11 out the 14 sub-categories of the IIAG. The largest improvements are shown in the sub-categories of Health, Rural Sector, and Gender, with all indicators showing improvements since 2000. At indicator level, of the 88 indicators included in the IIAG, the largest improvements appear in Cross-Border Tensions, Core International Human Rights Conventions, Legislation on Violence against Women, Ratio of External Debt Service to Exports, Digital Connectivity and Anti-Retroviral Treatment Provision.

In the end, Ethiopia received practically no benefits.
Instead, due to a broad patent and a questionable bankruptcy, it lost its right to utilize and reap benefits from its own teff genetic resources in the countries where the patent is valid.

GILBERT, AZ - A Mesa woman was arrested Saturday after she allegedly chased her husband around a Gilbert parking lot in an SUV during an argument over the presidential election.

The woman finally ran over her husband, leaving him with critical injuries.

According to a Gilbert police report, the argument started over her husband's lack of voter participation in the recent election.

Holly Solomon, 28, apparently believed her family was going to face hardship as a result of President Barack Obama's re-election.

Ethiopia get tough draw for 2012 Cecafa Challenge Cup

Ethiopia have been handed a tough draw for the upcoming Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup in Uganda.
The Waliya Antelopes - the only East and Central African country to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations - have been pitted against Kenya, newcomers South Sudan and defending champions Uganda in Group A.
The draw for the tournament, which will be held between 24 November and 6 December, was made on Monday at the Serena Hotel in Kampala by Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye.
Ethiopia will play the opening match of the competition against South Sudan.
Uganda coach Bobby Williamson told BBC Sport that playing Ethiopia and Kenya in the same group makes it very difficult but he hopes that his youthful team can stand up to the challenge and retain their title.
Williamson last week omitted from the event some of his senior players, including skipper Andy Mwesigwa, and opted for the younger players who he said need more exposure.
Uganda and South Sudan drew 2-2 in Juba four months ago in a friendly to usher the newcomers into top-flight football.

Ethiopia woman tells of sex slavery in Saudi Arabia

ADDIS ABABA: An Ethiopia woman revealed that she was the victim of sex slavery after she attempted to find work as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia.

For H, who asked that her identity remain anonymous, her ordeal began after she took a boat to Yemen, where after two months she was able to cross into Saudi Arabia and was hired by what she told Bikyamasr.com was a “nice couple” for a “decent salary.”

But that is when her horrific experience began. She continues to look down at her hands, ever moving, as she retells what she was forced to endure at the hands of her Saudi bosses.

“I don’t think the wife knew anything that was going on,” she is quick to point out. “But if she did hear my screams and did nothing, I hope she doesn’t sleep well.”

After three weeks of relative calm, H was finding life in southern Saudi Arabia comfortable and she was hoping that much of her first paycheck would be sent back to her family in Addis Ababa. Instead, no money came.

In East Africa, bag the safaris and head for the cities

Don’t carry any valuables when you walk the city streets. Leave your wallet in your hotel room. And watch out for pickpockets and scammers; they’re everywhere.

Such were the endless warnings I’d heard before setting out on a recent trip to Africa with my boyfriend, Ryan. And now, sitting in a thatch-roofed, grass-walled building in Addis Ababa, drinking peanut tea with Danny and William, two locals who’d approached us as we strolled through the city on our first night in town, they were coming back at me with a vengeance.

As William talked about how his mother would always make him some of the tea, known as lowse chai, whenever he was sick, I suddenly realized that we were smack in the middle of a classic Addis Ababa scam scenario that I’d seen several times online while preparing for the trip. Two or three young men approach you, act friendly, walk and talk and lead you into a bar or cafe, where you buy them a couple of drinks and then get dinged with an outrageous bill that you’re threatened with violence into paying.

The tea was good, though — it’s just peanut butter and hot water — and filling enough to make up for the breakfast I’d missed that morning. So I asked for the bill and waited for the hammer to fall.

The charge came to 36 birr — roughly $2.

And the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced that Southampton striker, Emmanuel Mayuka is expected to be the last player to join Zambia’s pre-2013 Africa Cup camp in January.

Nile Water Not Helping Farmers, Report Says

The Nile Basin has enough water for agriculture but water management policies in its 11 countries risk locking out small-scale farmers, a new research has found out.

The research, which has been published in a new book, The Nile River Basin: Water, Agriculture, Governance and Livelihoods, calls on governments to invest in agricultural water management initiatives like irrigation and rain water harvesting to help small-scale farmers grow food throughout the year.

"Agriculture, the economic bedrock of all eleven Nile countries and the most important source of income for the majority of the region's people, is under increased pressure to feed the basin's burgeoning population--already 180 million people, half of which live below the poverty line," the book says.
