82 Ethiopian nationals detained

Dodoma. The police here have detained 82 people believed to be Ethiopian nationals over illegal entry into the country. Regional Police Commander (RPC) Mr Zelothe Stephen said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at Chitego Village in Kongwa District.
A statement issued by the regional police boss said the suspected illegal migrants come from Kambata, Hadia and Sirite villages in Ethiopia and  entered the country via Kenya.
The RPC issued the statement a day after it was established that 43 suspected illegal immigrants from Ethiopia had died due to lack of air and food in a lorry’s container. They were travelling to southern countries.
The driver, who is still at large, abandoned the lorry, the dead bodies and survivors, who were in a bad condition after establishing that some of them had died.
The lorry, the bodies and survivors were abandoned at a roadside and were found on Tuesday morning by villagers who, informed the police.
“After we were notified we sent our team to the village some 114 kilometres from Dodoma town and managed to arrest 82 people over illegal entry.
“In addition to the survivors, most of who were in a bad condition, we also found 43 bodies of people, who had apparently died due to lack of air and food,” said Mr Stephen.
He said after abandoning them, the survivors started walking from the area and were arrested near Izava Village in Chamwino District.
The RPC said in collaboration with the villagers, they managed to nab 82 people and there was no report if there were some people, who managed to escape the police net.
He said during interrogation, the suspects, who speak bad English, said they were from Ethiopia and entered the country via Kenya.
“They told us that they boarded two lorries to Arusha and continued with their journey to Dodoma and wanted to go to Malawi. They said they started their journey about five months ago,” he said in the statement.
He noted that they told the police that there was a group of people in Nairobi, Kenya, who had arranged transport for them to Malawi.
According to Mr Stephen, the suspected illegal immigrants are collected by agents and placed in special houses where they are fed. After they reach a certain number they are placed in lorries and ferried to Malawi through Tanzania.

Tanzania:Ethiopian Migrants die in truck

The survivors were helped by villagers

Some 42 migrants have been found dead in the back of a truck in Tanzania.
Tanzania's Deputy Interior Minister Pereira Silima said they had come from Ethiopia and died from asphyxiation.
Local officials said more than 120 people had been packed into the truck, which was headed for Malawi.
Tanzania and Malawi have become key staging posts for people fleeing drought and conflict in Somalia and Ethiopia, and trying to reach South Africa.
'Dumped the dead'

Mr Silima said that according to survivor accounts, the 127 migrants had started off from Ethiopia in two trucks.
They passed through Kenya's capital, Nairobi, and onto the Tanzania town of Arusha where they were transferred into one lorry, he told the BBC's Network Africa programme.
The driver noticed there were problems in the central Dodoma region and stopped the vehicle.
"When he found out that at least 41 were dead, he released the survivors and dumped the dead in the bush," the minister said.
The container truck then drove off and the authorities are trying to trace it and the driver, he said.
Nearby villagers helped the survivors, one of whom later died.
Mr Silima said when the migrants were well enough, they would be taken to court and their embassy would be contacted.
Last week, at least 47 East African migrants drowned when their boat capsized on Lake Malawi after sailing from Tanzania.

'Hopes of Ethiopia' Watch the full Documentary

As part of the celebration of the London Olympics and Paralympic Games, The British Embassy has commissioned an Olympic-themed short film, titled 'Hopes of Ethiopia'.
The film focuses on the activities and aspirations of three Ethiopian athletes as they prepare for London 2012. Featured in the film: Yanet Seyoum, Ethiopia’s first female Olympic swimmer; Mohamed Aman, an-800 meters runner with a real shot at winning gold and Tesfalem Gebru, paralympian who lost his hand when his house was bombed during the Ethio-Eritrea war.

The film premiere will be on June 28 in Addis Ababa.

The main objective of this short documentary is to celebrate the hope, talent and confidence of Ethiopia’s athletes and to showcase them to the next generation that will seek to emulate them.

In addition to featuring inspiring performances from some of the world’s greatest athletes, the London 2012 Paralympic Games is an opportunity to change attitudes towards people with disabilities by driving home the fact that “disability is not inability” - this helps the wider goal of building a more inclusive society. This film hopes to challenge negative attitudes towards disability in Ethiopia by featuring Tesfalem.

Supporting the development of a new generation of open, inspiring, and talented leaders in Ethiopia is a key objective of the British government. We believe that the three athletes can help inspire Ethiopia’s youth and help promote the talent and boost the morale of Ethiopia’s emerging generation.

The film also promotes Ethiopian film talent, as the production company, EPIC Media, is Ethiopian. The documentary was shot in full HD and showcases strong and colorful visual images, innovative camerawork and fast moving editing techniques to appeal to Ethiopia’s young generation – the target audience. This will help promote a positive image of the non-sporting talent that exists in Ethiopia to local and international viewers.

Wholesale Turn - The unexpected replacement of ECX chief Elleni Gabre-Madhin

At the beginning of last week, there were only a few officials from government institutions who had been informed of the news that Eleni Z. Gabre-Madhin (PhD), founding CEO of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), would be replaced by Anteneh Assefa, vice president of the Bank of Abyssinia (BoA), through a letter signed by Addisu Legesse, board chairman.
Three days later, Eleni and the other expatriate management team members held a press conference on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
It is all part of a succession plan set in motion about two years ago, where finding a successful and promising successor took almost eight months, according to her.
“Many keep asking me ‘Why now?’ and think that something must have happened to make me to leave the ECX,” Eleni told Fortune. “I keep trying to explain that the management’s exit has been part of a plan set down at the very beginning.”
Indeed, the government had created a headhunting team chaired by Debretsion G. Mikael, minister of Science & Technology, comprising of members such as Beyene G. Meskel, director general of the Ethiopian Privatisation & Public Enterprises Supervising Agency; Abdella Bagerish, a private coffee exporter; and Eleni. It was a committee aided by a local employment company, Talent Search, which shortlisted nine applicants.
Four were finally selected to take five sets of screening instruments, including making an unusual presentation to the management of the ECX, which they were supposed to command when appointed, sources disclosed. At the end, the board of directors reached a “unanimous decision” to pick Anteneh, a banker whose operational skills are well recognised within the banking industry.
“I have known him for years,” said a businessman in the coffee export business. “I do not know much about his place in exchange of commodities, but he is a very talented young, up-and-coming operational person.”
Anteneh, father of two daughters, began his career as a graduate trainee with the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), after he graduated in management from Addis Abeba University (AAU). He later on pursued his postgraduate studies in corporate management and finance at the University of Paris (Sorbonne).
Almost 10 years younger than his predecessor, Anteneh has 12 years of experience in the banking industry, eight of these with the CBE. A little over four years ago, he joined Bank of Abyssinia as secretary of the board, where he was promptly promoted to vice president. Nonetheless, his bid to claim the topmost position at Zemen Bank, a year ago, had been rejected by the central bank, for lack of experience in credit management.

From Ethiopia to Harlem and the Top of the Culinary World ‘Yes, Chef,’ by Marcus Samuelsson

The universal rule of kitchen work, Marcus Samuelsson says in his crisp new memoir, “Yes, Chef,” goes as follows: “Stay invisible unless you’re going to shine.” That rule applies to writers too, especially to those who would write food memoirs. Because you like to put things in your mouth does not mean you have a story to tell.
Mr. Samuelsson, as it happens, possesses one of the great culinary stories of our time. It begins in Ethiopia where he was born into poverty and where, at 2, he contracted tuberculosis as did his mother and sister. The three of them trudged more than 75 miles in the terrible heat to a hospital in the capital city of Addis Ababa, where his mother died.
Mr. Samuelsson — at birth he was named Kassahun Tsegie — and his sister didn’t know their father. Orphaned, they found themselves on an airplane a year later, adopted by a white, middle-class family in Goteborg, Sweden.
You may know some of the later bits of Mr. Samuelsson’s story. In 1995, while cooking for the Scandinavian restaurant Aquavit in Manhattan, he became the youngest chef to receive a three-star rating from The New York Times. Eight years later the James Beard Foundation named him the best chef in New York City. In 2009 he cooked for President Obama’s first state dinner.

Young Ethiopian man found Dead in a Maribyrnong River, 'My son was murdered', father

Michael Atakelt's girlfriend, Elsa Giday, with his father Getachew Seyoum

The father of a young Ethiopian man found in a Melbourne river believes he finally has some hope of finding out how whether or not his son was murdered following a hearing in the Coroner's Court today.
Getachew Atakelt Seyoum welcomed Judge Jennifer Coate's decision to hold a 10-day inquest in February. He said the fact that the scope of the inquest will include the circumstances in which his son, Michael Atakelt, died last year might help answer the "millions of questions" he and others have about what occurred.
Michael Atakelt, 22, was found dead in the Maribyrnong River on July 7 last year. He had been in police custody the night before he disappeared and had told friends of being taken in for questioning by Victoria Police officers up to 10 times in the weeks before he died. The court was told that police records indicated he had only been taken into custody once.

Michael Atakelt.
Mr Seyoum welcomed the fact that the inquest would be public and would run from 11 to 22 February next year. Thirty-four witnesses will be called and a panel of experts will be able to cross-examine each other's evidence, a practice Judge Coate described as "hot-tubbing".
Some of approximately 100 people from the African community who attended the directions hearing said they felt their concerns about Michael Atakelt's death were finally heard. "I'm really happy. We might get some answers," said Michael's girlfriend, Elsa Giday.
"It's a good outcome," Hakim Stout said.

Ethiopian Australian Helen Kassa said she planned to expand on the short documentary she had made about the case for a film school project. "I think it's really good that we will have some sort of conclusion and will know what happened to Michael. I really hope so," she said.
Mr Seyoum, who represented himself in court, has repeatedly told Victoria Police that he believes his son was murdered and has been calling for the homicide squad, not Footscray police, to investigate his son's death. Many members of the African community have also publicly called for the homicide squad to investigate.
Judge Coate did not address this in the hearing, but made it clear that she would broaden the scope of the investigation if required as evidence was presented at the inquest.
Mr Seyoum has repeatedly stated that Footscray police officers told him his son had no injuries when found. But when he, accompanied by friends, identified the body, he said Michael had a damaged eyeball and facial injuries and his body appeared to be covered in bruises.

Ethiopia want to bid to host major tournaments BBC Reports

The President of the Ethiopia Football Federation Sahilu Gebre Mariam insists his country will be bidding to stage a major event in the near future.
He is determined to re-establish Ethiopia's position as one of the pioneers of African football.
"Any time soon we shall be bidding for the Africa Cup of Nations," he said.
"Previously we were not in a position because of the infrastructure, but any time within two years we shall demand that we should organise an event."
Sahilu's statement comes as Ethiopia showed some good form on the pitch in 2014 World Cup and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

They have also recently announced the construction of a new national stadium in Addis Ababa, that is expected to be completed by 2014.
The Walyas drew 1-1 in South Africa and then beat visiting Central African Republic 2-0 to put themselves top of their World Cup qualifying group.
The 1962 African champions have alsoreached the last round of qualifying for next year's Nations Cup after drawing 1-1 with Benin and advancing on the away goals rule.
Ethiopia, one of the four founding members of the Confederation of African Football, have hosted the Nations Cup three times in 1962, 1968 and 19

Ethiopians Report Dire Conditions in Saudi Jails

Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia say about 1,700 of their countrymen are being held in dire conditions at prisons in the Saudi city of Jazan.
VOA's Horn of Africa Service spoke by phone to four of the prisoners this week. The prisoners said they lack sufficient food, water and medical treatment, and that eight Ethiopian inmates have died from malaria and other causes.
Jazan is located in southwestern Saudi Arabia, near the border with Yemen. The Ethiopians being held are migrants who attempted to enter Saudi Arabia without visas.
One young prisoner told VOA that he was beaten by border guards and thrown in jail on false charges of drug possession.
“They accused me of possessing drugs I am not even familiar with,” he said. “The court said I am guilty of possessing drugs and sentenced me to 15 years of prison time, 1,500 lashes and a fine of half-a-million Saudi Arabian riyals.”
The prisoners also report severe overcrowding in the jails. They appealed to the Ethiopian government and international community to obtain their release.
There was no immediate reaction from the Ethiopian or Saudi governments.
Thousands of Ethiopians cross the Gulf of Aden to Yemen each year, hoping to reach Saudi Arabia or other countries in search of a better life.

Supermodel Liya Kebede Connects Traditional Ethiopian Weavers To New York's Hottest Boutiques

Lemlem's high fashion line of handmade clothes is also preserving a way of life in Ethiopia.
Liya Kebede isn’t out to build a fashion empire. "As much as I want it to be humongous," says the Ethiopian super model, "there’s a limit to how big it can get." That's because Lemlemshirts, scarves, and dresses are designed in New York, but made from handwoven materials crafted by traditional weavers in Kebede's home country. That said, "humongous" may be a relative term: Lemlem’s products are already available at boutiques around the world fromManama, Bahrain to Jackson, Mississippi, and at large retailers like Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdale's.
The clothing line provides employment for practitioners of a centuries-old tradition that was facing extinction. "I visited an area of these incredible weavers that we’ve always had in Ethiopia who make incredible work but don’t really have the space to sell their clothes anymore," Kebede says in this week's episode of Innovation Agents. "It’s one thing to donate money. It’s a whole other thing to give an opportunity for someone to make his own money." And that's how Lemlem--which means "to bloom" in Amharic--was founded five years ago.

Queen of Sheba's Gift? Genetic Find Ties Ethiopia to Other Lands

Clues to the origins of the Queen of Sheba legend are written in the DNA of some Africans, according to scientists.

Genetic research suggests Ethiopians mixed with Egyptian, Israeli or Syrian populations about 3,000 years ago.

This is the time the queen, mentioned in great religious works, is said to have ruled the kingdom of Sheba.

The research, published in The American Journal of Human Genetics, also sheds light on human migration out of Africa 60,000 years ago.

The Queen of Sheba

  • Queen mentioned in the Bible, the Koran and the Ethiopian Kabra Nagast
  • Sheba was a rich kingdom that prospered through trade with Jerusalem and the Roman Empire, and spanned modern day Ethiopia and Yemen
  • Queen said to have visited Jerusalem with gold to give to King Solomon
  • Some texts record that she had a son with King Solomon

The Ethiopian Rock Band, Jano – Interview with Producer Bill Laswell

Members of the new Ethiopian rock band Jano. The group is expected to tour the United States this year following the launch of their upcoming album.

New York (TADIAS) – When it comes to world music, New York-based producer Bill Laswell is convinced that the next big act coming out of Ethiopia is a young rock band called Jano – a ten member ensemble that fuses distinctly Ethiopian sounds with heavy guitar, drum and other instruments.

“I think they were probably deeply influenced by the great musicians of Ethiopia, the great singers without question,” said Laswell in a recent interview with TADIAS. Laswell, who has put together the band’s forthcoming CD, has an extensive resume including work with Ethiopian vocalist Gigi, among others.

Regarding Jano, he added: They have “progressive sounds. It’s very new and very different. Nothing like this ever came out of Ethiopia.”

Laswell said what makes the young musicians unique is that they manage to keep the traditional Ethiopian vibe while appealing to global music lovers. “You hear old songs by singers from the 60′s inside of the rock,” he said. “Another interpretation that might upset some people but carries on the tradition in a modern way.” He continued: “These are modern instruments but it does not overlook the kirar, it does not overlook masinko, it does not overlook the traditional singing, the church music and the power of the tradition. It does not take that for granted. They don’t join the ranks of Ethiopian music, they break the rules.”

The group consists of four vocalists (two male and two female), two guitarists, two keyboard players, a bassist and a drummer – all in their twenties.

According to Laswell, the band was talent-spotted by Ethiopian entrepreneur Addis Gessesse who is also credited for helping to launch the careers of reggae star Ziggy Marley and Ethiopian pop icon Teddy Afro.

As to the release date for Jano’s album, Laswell said they have an unconventional marketing strategy worked out. “The album is done and the packaging is done and they are in the process of creating it now in Ethiopia, and probably it will come here soon,” he said. “It will come as a word-of-mouth and not so much as a marketing distribution build up how America does things, but more to do with getting that interest to communities.” He added: “I think it will start in the Ethiopian community and hopefully it will build into what the world calls the ‘World Music’ genre, which is pretty big internationally.”

Church Raises Nearly $16,000 To Send Body Of Ethiopian Teen Home

LARKSVILLE, Tenn. - It seemed an impossible task for a Clarksville church. They needed to raise nearly $16,000  to help get the body of a deaf teen, who drowned this week, back to his home country of Ethiopi a.

Ethiopian Descent Theodor Gebre Selassie Subjected to Racist "monkey chants" During Russia Match

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Racism and violence involving Russia's fans have marred the start of the European Championship and confirmed fears that Euro 2012 could be a troubled tournament.
Fans of co-host nations Poland and Ukraine had been seen as a potential source of racial abuse, following a damning investigation by the BBC. Instead, Russia became the main security issue after evidence emerged Saturday of incidents at the Wroclaw stadium where it beat the Czech Republic 4-1 on Friday.
Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is black, was the target of racial abuse reported by official fan monitors to Euro 2012 organizer UEFA.
Russia supporters later fought stadium stewards in an attack seen worldwide after footage circulated online. Wroclaw police said four people were treated in a hospital.
A potentially volatile clash between Russia and Poland looms in Warsaw on Tuesday — a Russian national holiday with fans planning to march from the city center to the stadium.
A Russia team spokesman, Nikolai Komarov, said the federation declined comment on details of the reported incidents.
However, Komarov told The Associated Press in a telephone interview: "The federation has many fans, you don't have control over them all."
Saturday's reports tarnished what was a successful opening day for Euro 2012. Two compelling matches followed constant negative headlines regarding social and political issues in the eastern European neighbors, including monkey chants aimed at Netherlands players during a public practice Wednesday at Krakow, Poland.

BBC Sports Interviews with Ethiopia's Coach Sewnet Bishaw

Less than a week ago the Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw could stroll the streets of Addis Ababa and nobody would have taken much notice.
Now the 59-year-old waves and embraces Ethiopian fans who greet him following his team's 1-1 away in South Africa in their opening 2014 World Cup qualifier.
"The people are very happy - they like it very much when we win," he said.
"For us the result against South Africa was more than a draw - it was a victory," Bishaw told BBC Sport.
Many see the result in South Africa as Ethiopia's greatest result at senior international level since winning the Africa Cup of Nations half a century ago.
"We used to play away against the likes of Nigeria and Guinea and come back beaten but this time we've surprised everyone," he points out.

Ethiopian Maid arrested over theft of jewellery worth Dh45,000

The Sharjah Police on Wednesday arrested an Ethiopian maid for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Dh45,000 from her employer’s house in Khorfakkan.
The police said they received a complaint from the Emirati employer of the maid about the theft. The Anjad patrol, CID and forensic experts went to the house and lifted the fingerprints and other pieces of evidence.

The police suspected the maid who initially denied any involvement, but after she was confronted with the evidence, she admitted to the crime. She told the police that she used to clean the room of her employer’s wife and had seen the jewellery, which she stole.

The jewellery has been recovered and returned to the family. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution. The police warned people against leaving valuables like gold in the hands of maids or domestic servants, who would be tempted to steal them.

The Air Up There: A Look Into Ethiopia’s Distance Running Legacy

Most Ethiopians tried to avoid running on the roads, with the exception of Saturdays, when hundreds of runners would gather on a straight stretch of road outside Addis to do tempo runs between 10 and 35K
Coffee and long distance runners are two of Ethiopia’s most valuable exports, and when one steps outside at five thirty in the morning it is to the sight of women preparing coffee on charcoal stoves and weary runners sleepily making their way toward the forest. Most of my days in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, started this way: with a five-minute walk to wake up and a run of at least an hour. Ethiopians, who alongside their East African rivals from Kenya account for a high percentage of the top long-distance runners in the world, do a lot of their running at quite an easy pace, weaving in and out of Eucalyptus trees in the forests to shouts of encouragement from people walking to work. ‘Iso ambessa’ was my favorite of these phrases, – meaning ‘keep going, lion’. Unlike in my native Britain, the shouts that runners receive in Ethiopia are exclusively positive. During my time in Ethiopia I lived at the Running Across Borders training camp, and did most of my running with a young runner called Gudisa. We were frequently joined on these morning runs by other athletes, who would run along behind us for a while before disappearing into the trees.

The body of 23-year-old Lawrence man Yelekal Alemu, known as Kal, was discovered east of Lawrence on May 31, 2012. Alemu, a former Kansas University student, was reported missing about three weeks earlier. No foul play is suspected in his death.
Douglas County authorities Friday identified a 23-year-old former Kansas University student, Yelekal Alemu, as the person whose body was found Thursday east of Lawrence.

Aregawi emulated Magiso's feat with the fastest 1500m this year in 3min 56.54sec.

A Journey To The Hottest Place On Earth: Dallol Ethiopia

No one travels alone to the hottest place on earth. You need, for starters, a driver and a Jeep stocked with water bottles and four days of non-perishable food. And because that Jeep is bound to sink in the fine sand of the desert, you need another Jeep (and another driver) to tug it out. There are no places to lodge or dine in this desert, so you'll need space for cots, a cook, plus a few armed guards, because the hottest place on earth is also somewhat lawless. And finally, because an entourage of this size costs many thousands of dollars, you'll need some fellow travelers to split the bill – the sort of people who like to fry themselves on vacation.

My father is the easiest recruit. Dad, who naps best roasting in the afternoon sun, is a lover of extreme heat. He's also an extreme traveler, drawn to the fringes of places, all the countries where no one honeymoons. Alone, he's wandered Rwanda, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan andSierra Leone. From my father, I've inherited both tendencies: I'm known for getting pig-pink sunburns, and also for stalking the edges of maps.
